What Exactly Is Fear of Success?
Both fear of failure and fear of success create an apprehension that something bad is going to happen. They're related but different.
For me, it's important to literally define words as I often get a greater understanding of their meaning when I can clearly define them. Let's look at the word "fear."
The Random House Unabridged Dictionary defines fear as "a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain etc. whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling of condition of being afraid."
Here are some synonyms: apprehension, consternation, dismay, terror, fright, panic, horror, trepidation, alarm, dread.
Fear, alarm, and dread mean you suspect you are about to experience a painful emotional experience. Alarm involves an event while fear and dread involve a condition you experience while anticipating an event.
Fear of failure then would be the anxiety you feel while anticipating not making your goal.
So then, what exactly is fear of success? Anxiety you feel while anticipating making your goal? That doesn't make sense. Of course I want to make my goal. Of course I want to be a success!
Fear of success is the fear that you will make your goal but that something awful will happen as a result.
You're not afraid of winning; you're afraid of what might happen when you do. In most cases, that involves some sort of change - to your lifestyle, friends, family, or circumstances. It could mean that others will expect more from you then or you'll expect more from yourself. It could mean that you forfeit your right to complain about the struggle or receive attention for your ongoing effort.
Whatever your personal fear of the change that might occur as result of your success, you need to identify it in order to overcome it.
Take a good hard look at who you'll need to be when you reach your goal and all the expectations that come with it. Take a look at what you'll lose as well. If you think that's ridiculous, I challenge you to look deeper.
How will success really change your friendships? Your marriage? Your relationship with your parents or children? Once you know you can handle that, you're ready for the top!
